The year 5 teachers are Mr Linton, Miss Harrison
In Year 5 this half term the pupils are preparing for the transition to year 6. This term and the next will focus on arithmetic skills such as adding unlike fractions, adding and subtracting mixed numbers and finding percentage of number. The pupils will also be doing lots of outdoor practical and problem solving activities.
The children will be focusing on spelling, punctuation and grammar. We will also be using talk for writing to help us write extended pieces of writing to include relative clauses and elaborating sentence starters to include adverbial phrases. We will be reading the book- 'Kensuke's Kingdom'.
We will be reading short texts and children to learn how to use various reading strategies to enable them to decode new words that they meet, summarise more than one paragraph and make inferences based on what is stated or implied.
We will be learning about Europe this term. The children will be researching and comparing different countries in Europe, looking specifically at: the food, landmarks, capital cities and culture.
In Unicorns and Minotaurs class the children will receive homework each term. They must complete one piece per week. They will also have extra reading this term. Reading chapters of Kensuke's Kingdom. Home work will be checked each Friday.
The pupils attended London in February 2018. They had a wonderful experience visiting many London landmarks such as Big Ben and The Houses of Parliament. Be sure to ask your child about their time in London! :)
